Did it happen on 5th Avenue?
Or 34th Street?
Somewhere in Connecticut, I know
Perhaps it was at the shop
You know, the one just around the corner
Ah, I can still remember the night
Then, that Christmas
Carol, the bishop's wife
And that football ref
Who took a few days off
(and came to dinner)
A vacation
Around Christmas
Just a bunch of mixed nuts
Now it's true that
We're no angels
And old habits die hard
So we nicked a few
EL Fudges
But it's not like we stole Christmas,
(Like someone I could mention)
Still we jumped when
The bells of St Mary started ringing,
Jingling all the way down the street
Our faces turned ghostly white
Polar expressions
Yes, Christmas gremlins were we
Real bad Santas
We thought we were scrooged
But we were saved in earnest
We were found an escape clause
By our deer friend, Prancer
So that's our Christmas story
Our holiday affair
Sometimes I think that it's such
A wonderful life
Even when simply staying
 Home alone with you
At Christmastime
And watching TV

 To embrace chaos
You might stare upward
Into a snowfall
And adjust your eyes
To the onrush of white specks
Dizzyingly zipping by
A barrage of delicacy
Of mad, frenetic fragility
As the flakes
                                        Hitch rides
                                                On currents
One breaking
                                                 This way
                                    And then that
And now into your eye
Where it meets its warm end
Oh, to witness a snowfall
Over the horizon
As we all do
Is to know languid emergence
The slow, peaceful build
Of winter's construction crew
But to stare upward
Into a snowfall
If we dare
Is to behold an all-out attack
The furibund anabasis
Of winter's army

It would seem absurd on many levels
If they bothered to stop and think about it
This paper won't be cradling these presents
By this time tomorrow
It must seem wasteful
Yet it some ways it is not
For they share the paper
The tape and scissors as well
But this, too, is absurd
For there's no distinction between gifts
No delineation, no demarcation
Well, other than the couch or stairwell
Which serves as the barrier
The magical force field
To be trespassed only to share materials
In the No Man's Land
Over the couch back
Or at the bottom of the stairs
And what of the soundtrack of the absurd?
The narration of Gene Shepard in A Christmas Story
Repeating in the background
Playing out of tradition--both personal and programmatic
But which neither watches
And can only make out pieces
Between rips, tears, cuts, and tapes
*Crinkle, crinkle* "You used up all the glue on purpose!" *Sknnnnnt*
Now it's time to end this wrap session
And move all the presents under the tree
And to pretend not to count out
How many they absurdly got for each other

December 4th, 2021

It's my turn to look at it now
You can have it when I'm done
I don't understand why the store is so boring
When the catalog is so cool
It's probably because we only go there to get tools
And shoes
And husky pants
"Mom, do we have any markers?"
I'm gonna circle what I want in red
And you can do it in blue
That way Santa
(And Mom and Dad)
Will know
Which is which
Krissy? She can use a pen
Look, I know exactly where to go!
Football jerseys will be . . .
. . . right about . . .
HERE.
Okay, here.
No,wait, HERE!
(See, I told you.)
I want a Jaworski
Or maybe Bartowski
This year
OK, now, the . . . toys . . . are in . . . the back
HERE
oh My GOD
There are a LOT of toy pages this year!
Dude, go watch GI Joe
I'm gonna be a while

 Crunch! Crunch! Crunch! Crunch!
Holes in the white with our feet we punch!
We like walking in ice-covered snow a bunch!
Crunch! Crunch! Crunch! Crunch!
I am Godzilla; you are King Kong
Those little snow villagers won't last very long
Their drift houses are weak, and we are so strong
Now you are Godzilla, and I am King Kong
You set the record for the Winter Long Jump
You made a big hole with your feet and another with your rump
You accepted your medal on top of an ol' tree stump
I wanna try for that record in the Winter Long Jump
Hurry and run as fast as you can
We're being chased by the Abomibibble-
. . . Ombommbible . ..
. . . Abdominal . . .
We're being chased by the A-bom-in-a-ble Snowman
If he catches us, he'll cook us in a frying pan
Hurry, let's run as fast as we can
You said, "This isn't good snow for making balls"
Then we giggled because you said "making balls"
Then we made a little snowman and we gave him balls
But they kinda sucked because it's not good snow for making balls
Crunch! Crunch! Crunch! Crunch!
I'm getting cold, let's go home, I got a hunch
Mom'll make grilled cheese and tomato soup for lunch
Crunch! Crunch! Crunch! Crunch!

She doesn't so much wear her winter coat
As she allows it to envelop her
No, she doesn't put it on
It grows around her
Arms, shoulders, and torso
A multi-colored, soft, protective
Exoskeleton
With her tucked safely inside
Her furious shell
That resists the wind
And warms her chin
And keeps unwanted prattle from creeping in
These chattering teeth
Have no time for yours
These ears are muffed
. . . normally
But today she decides to untuck slightly
Pulls herself out--guardedly--of her winter hunch
As she walks along with him
She un-muffs one ear
To hear him say, "Isn't it funny . . ."

Her name hung in the December air
As if balancing on the cloud of his breath
A breath made heavier by both
The chill
And the excitement he felt
In sounding out her name
As if it were truly his to sound out
"Vic-TOR-i-a," he puffed,
Watching with delight
As each letter formed an icicle in mid-air
And sloooooooowly
cas
   cad
        ed
 Toward the hard, cold ground
